Philadelphia – 3, Chicago – 2.
Bottom of the eighth. Cory Lidle has a 1- 0 lead over Mark Prior on Burrell’s second inning homer into the left field basket. Cormier relieves with one out and the tieing run on second; he retires Cory Patterson and gives way to Billy Wagner.
Wagner has given up zero runs in eleven innings on the season; manager Manuel trusts him to pitch to Derrick Lee who is hitting over .400, leads the league in RBIs, homeruns, and god knows what else. Lee hits a 3-1 pitch, a 98 mile-per-hour fast ball, into the centerfield vegetable garden; Cubs lead 2-1.
Top of the ninth. Phils load the bases with one out on hits by Burrell and Bell and a walk to pinch-hitter Offerman. Placido Polanco hits for Lieberthal and drills a sizzling liner straight up the middle, but Cub closer LaTroy Hawkins snares it, and thinks double play. He looks to third: no play; he looks to second: no play; he looks to first: no play. He fires to first anyway. The ball hits Offerman’s helmet and ricochets into the stands; Phillies lead 3-2.
Bottom of the ninth. Wagner puts down the Cubs 1-2-3.
