01/28/2005 Archived Entry: "Winterball Final Series Update: Mazatlan are the Mexican Champions"

By Carlos Fragoso

The underdog team, the one that qualified as the "lucky loser" in first semifinal series, becomes the Mexican Pacific League Champions, first time ever that a lucky loser team, gets the title, since the beginning.

Now Mazatlan will play the Caribbean Series as the host team in all ways being also the countries representative as well as the city one.

Playing with a hearty spirit more than having an impressive line up, pitching satff was the reason why they got to this happy ending for the sake of all fans and supporters.
I am sure that champioship was in their mind since the beginning of this season, and by just taking a look of the starting roster in which you see names of the tale of Joe Borchard ,Jason Dubois, Jared Sandberg,Will Ohman, Danny Magee etc, one realize that Mazatlan main office was not playing games in order to pursue the title, therefore to represent Mexico into the Caribbean series.
However, things went not right for the manager Dan Firova, who was replaced earlier and right after failing to track in this team, and victorious JJ Pacho the Deer SS for 19 seasons come over, and gave differernt winning attitude.

Players like Joe Dillon, Tim Olson and John Gall were decisives to joint local palyers to a almost incredible mission ,to qualify to play offs, which they did it, but pitching led by Frank Campos, Pablo Ortega, sensation rookie Walter Silva also a Mazatlan native player, and closer Greg Hansell provided all the quality pitching they needed to emerge as one of the most dangerous contenders.

Last night game, ended 7-1 with winner pitcher Pablo Ortega going the distance, while losing pitcher Claudio Moreno did it for Mexicali.

By the way Mexicali manager, former Toronto Blue Jays skipper, Tim Johnson set up a not envy record of losing 6 championships series in a row, he just can´t find the way to complete his task.
He previously lost with Hermosillo, twice with Mazatlan ,twice with Obregon and now with Mexicali, he definitely needs a better lucky charm going along with him.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL..........

PUERTO RICO

Mayaguez Indians announced players who will be added to this representing team being those, pitchers Omar Olivares (Caguas),Josué Matos and José Santiago both from Carolina Giants and players Lou Lucca and Raul Gonzalez ,both from Santurce,as well as Alex Cintron from Caguas.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Cibao Eagles, led by the hand of major league star SS, Miguel Tejada who went 6-4 including a HR ,driving in 4 runs, and reliever Hipolito Pichardo were all the support they needed to advance one game closer to the title.
There was a total of 18 hits offensive developed by Eagles that made them get Tigers so easily, and beat them up. and now they are in the road to celebrate the team´s 68th birthday which is today with the championship.
Valdimir Nuñez ,lost for Tigers.

VENEZUELA
