Taiwan Baseball News: Chen, Martinez Receive Honours

Brother Elephants' all-star center fielder Chih-yuen Chen was named the Chinese Professional Baseball League's Offensive Player of the Month for the month of June. Chen batted .429 (18-for-42) with three home runs, three triples, 10 RBIs and seven bases in 12 games. It was an all-around performance as he helped his team to a 9-2-1 record in June. Chen is batting .342 so far this season.
Sinon Bulls right hander Osvaldo Martinez picked up the Defensive Player of the Month honours for the month of June as he had an ERA of 1.82. The Dominican native was 3-1-0 in five appearance, four of them starts. Martinez walked six and struck out 43 batters in 29 2/3 innings. He also set a new consecutive strikeout record as he struck out seven straight Makoto Gida batters on June 29. He previous record was six. Martinez is 9-5 with a 2.62 ERA and 115 strikeouts this year. The single-season strikeout record is 200 which was set by American native William Flynt of the now-defunct Jung-Kuo Bears back in 1994. However, Martinez is the career strikeout leader with 926 K's.
