Taiwan Baseball News: Chang: Deadly Combination of Power and Speed; Burgos Finds Groove

By Andrew Wong

China Trust Whales 4 Sinon Bulls 5

Sinon Bulls third baseman Tai-shan Chang is certainly comparable to the MLB San Francisco Giants slugging outfielder Barry Bonds in that they both have a rare combination of power and speed. With 96 career stolen bases and 106 home runs, Chang could become the first player in Chinese Professional Baseball League history to hit the 100-100 mark.

Chang wasn't a factor last night as he went 0-for-4 with a run scored. Instead, it was short stop Jau-han Cheng who went 3-for-4 with a triple and his eighth home run of the 2003 CPBL season off Maximo Rosa of the China Trust Whales en route to finishing with two runs scored and three RBIs. Cheng was named the Game's MVP as the Bulls beat the Whales 5-4 before 5,392 fans at Tainan Stadium.

First-half batting champions Chi-fong Hung of the Whales also launched his eighth homer of the year off Bulls starter Osvaldo Martinez, who surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits in three innings of work. Hung finished the evening 2-for-5 with two runs plated and another two driven in. Third baseman Chien-wei Chen went 2-for-4 and scored in front of him.

Seldom-used Yun-chih Kuo (1-0-0) picked up the win for the Bulls in relief as he pitched one scoreless inning, giving up two walks while striking out one batter. Ramon Morel also threw one scoreless inning, scattering one hit, to pick up his 15th save of the season.

Japanese native Hiroaki Nakayam started for the Whales and pitched seven solid innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on six hits and a walk. But Rosa (3-3-1) blew it as the Bulls scored three runs off him, two earned, in the eighth inning.

Brother Elephants 2 President Lions 7

John Burgos has definitely found his mojo. The American native has won three straight since starting his CPBL comback 0-2-0 and now he is 3-2-0 after a 7-2 victory last night over the Brother Elephants in front of 9,121 fans at Taichung Stadium.

Burgos pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings, scattering seven hits, walking three and striking out five. He was named the Game's MVP.

The President Lions got off to a quick 1-0 start on Elephants starter Shin Nakagomi (6-7-0), who surrendered four runs, all earned, on eight hits through seven innings. Leos center fielder Kang-ling Huang luanched a solo blast, his second, off Nakagomi. Haung finished 2-for-4 with two runs plated and another driven in. Japanese second baseman Hiroaki Yoshimi had a 3-for-4 night in which he scored three times while designated hitter Lien-hung Chen finished the evening 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Left fielder/first baseman Chuan-jia Wang went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and one RBI and regular left-fielder Hung-yuan Lin finished at 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Burgos' bid for a shutout ended at the hands of the usually dependable Jung-yang Tsao, who gave up two runs, all earned, on two hits in 2/3 innings.

The Elephants got two runs in the ninth inning as second baseman Shun-shian Fong finished the evening 2-for-5 with one RBI. Center fielder Chih-yuen Chen had two more hits in a 2-for-5 performance.
