Taiwan Baseball News: Pang Bangs One Over Stands; John Frascatore in CPBL

Brother Elephants 4 President Lions 1

Cheng-ming Pang hit his eighth home run of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season and Japanese native Hisanori Yokota pitched eight strong innings as the Brother Elephants beat the President Lions 4-1 last night before a solid crowd of 10,912 at Tainan Stadium.

The Elephants scored three runs off Lions starter John Frascatore (0-1-0), newly arrived from America, in six innings en route to the win. Pang, the Game's MVP, finished 3-for-4 with the homer, a double, one run scored and two RBIs while center fielder Chih-yuen Chen's only hit was his 10th homer of the year, also off Frascatore. The right hander surrendered three runs, all earned, on six hits, five walks. He had six strikeouts.

Yokota (9-2-0) scattered seven hits in eight scoreless innings, walking two and striking out four batters. Ching-li Wang pitched to one batter and threw only two pitches to record his third save of the season.

The Elephants will play the Leos again tonight at Tainan Stadium (5:05 p.m. Taiwan time).

LIONS NOTE: The President Lions have added former Major League right-handed pitcher John Frascatore to the 25-man roster. The American native also hits right, is 183 cm tall, weighs 95 kg and will wear No. 50. This is his first year in the CPBL. The Leos now have four foreign players on their ball club including Americans Joe Davenport, John Burgos and Japanese native Hiroaki Yoshimi.

Makoto Gida 3 First Securities Agan 3

The Makoto Gida and First Securities Agan played to a 3-3 tie last night at Kaoshung Stadium in front of 1,112 onlookers.

Gida right fielder Cheng-han Wu went 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot followed by first baseman Jia-hsian Hsieh's 3-for-3 performance in which he recorded a walk, two doubles and one run scored. Designated hitter Chin-yi Cheng went 1-for-1 with three walks and one RBI.

Rho-hui Feng pitched six solid innings for the Gida as he gave up three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits and one walk. He struck out two batters.

Korean native Dong Ho Kim started for the Agan but his night was over early as he was pulled after giving up one earned run in 2 1/3 innings on three walks. Rue-hao Liang, Wen-hsiung Hsu and Feng-hua Lee closed the ball game out for the Agan.
