06/25/2003 Archived Entry: "MLB News: Bonds Steals 500th Base"

MLB News by Eric Gartman

Bonds Steals 500th Base-Barry Bonds made history again yesterday, stealing his 500th base, and becoming the first player to steal 500 bases and hit 500 homers. Bonds is already the only player to hit 400 homers and steal 400 bases, and many are wondering if either feat will ever be replicated. But there are actually several players with a good chance at joining Bonds in at least the 400/400 club. The first player I'd mention is Alfonso Soriano. Last year Soriano hit 39 homers and stole 41 bases at the tender age of 24. He now has 80 career homers and 106 stolen bases, and is on pace to join the 40/40 club this year. He is an immmense talent and could certainly keep up these numbers for years to come. Another player with a good chance is Montreal's Vlad Guerrero. Last year Vlad hit 39 homers while stealing 40 bases. Vlad already has 217 career homers, but only 119 steals. The 40 he stole last year represent a career high. Vlad will need to continue to swipe bases at that rate if he expects to match Bonds. Another player with a good chance is Texas star Alex Rodriguez. A-rod currently has 316 career homers and 167 stolen bases. A-rod used to steal bases regularly, swiping 46 in 1998, but has stopped recently due to fear of injury. He only stole 9 last year. Finally, there is one player who had an excellent chance at matching Bonds' feat, but was unable to due to injuries, Jose Canseco. Canseco was the first member of the 40/40 club, a feat later matched by Bonds in '96 and A-rod in '98. But alas, his immense talents were wasted while Bonds kept on going.
