Taiwan Baseball News: Lions and Bulls Split

By Andy Wong

President Lions 6 Sinon Bulls 1

Wei-luen Pan was this year's No. 1 draft pick. In two starts, he has showed why. Pan had his fourth straight excellent outing, giving up just one run, earned, in seven innings to lead the President Lions to a 6-1 romp over the Sinon Bulls in the first game of a double-header yesterday afternoon with 3,520 people in the stands. Pan improved to an unbelievable 4-0-0 and has an ERA of 1.00 so far in the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season. Pan was also named the Game MVP.

Jung-yang Tsao pitched two scoreless innings to get his fourth save of the season.

Overall, it was definitely not a good day for the Bulls. Osvaldo Martinez could not have found a more worse time to have a bad start as he gave up four runs, all earned, in seven innings to drop to 3-1-0. His 2003 ERA is at 1.91. Reliever Ren-ming yang was no better as he gave up two runs, both earned, in two innings of relief of Martinez. Bulls' team captain and second baseman Chang-yi Huang went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

President Lions 5, Sinon Bulls 6

At least not all was lost for the Sinon Bulls yesterday. They lost the first game of a double-header to make up a cancelled game on April 4 but won the nightcap, 6-5 over the President Lions in front of 5,012 fans who turned out to see the matchup between the CPBL's top two teams.

With the win, the Bulls remain 0.5 games up on the Lions. American Jeffrey Louis Andra started the game for the Bulls and gave up four runs, three earned, in 7 1/3 innings but closer Ramon Morel gave up a run 1 2/3 and was therefore credited with the win, his second.

Fellow American Joe Davenport pitched a tremendous ball game, giving up two runs, one earned, in seven innings but reliever Yang-kai Chen came in and gave up four runs, two earned, in 1/3 innings to lose the game for the Leos. Chen dropped to 0-1-0.

Center fielder Kang-ling Huang went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the leadoff spot to lead the Lions while third baseman Tai-shan Chang went 2-for-3 with a run scored and left fielder Song-yong Luo went 1-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Bulls, who improved to 11-4-0. The Lions dropped to 11-5-0.

Pitching is the key in the CPBL and Japanese native Hisanori Yokota gave up one run, earned in the fifth frame, in eight innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0-0 on the year. Yokota also racked up the Game MVP award. His ERA fell to 2.37. Fellow Japanese native Shin Nakagomi pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
