12/17/2004 Archived Entry: "Mexican Pacific League : Vinny Castilla Strikes Back"

By Carlos Fragoso

VINNY CASTILLA presence was not enough to lead up Hermosillo as Guasave Cottoneers beat them in series 2-1.Castilla hit his first HR of the season, last night ,and now his average is .385 after his first series played, but Orange Growers need more then that to really make it to the play offs and get out of the bottom spot.

Culiacan took series off Obregon 2-0 , and one tied game ,last nigth after 11 innings played, was stopped by time limit (midnight).
A bottom half HR by ADAN AMEZCUA tied the game up off reliever Adrian Ramirez, and also made the Tomato Growers team to break a record of most HR's by a team with 105, hold before by Los Mochis Sugarcane Growers and posed in 2001-2002 season.

Super red hot Culiacan's catcher ADAN MUŅOZ continued his torrid hitting pace and by going 4-4, jumped up to the leading position with a solid .388 batting avg.He went 10-8 in series.
Also red hot CHRIS COSTE homered by Obregon, his 13th a personal record in this league

Cuban pitcher ARIEL PRIETO, lost his first game of the season, after 8 victories, against Culiacan and he is now 8-1.

In another "run away" story, Navojoa's OF J.J DAVIS was suspended by the league, after his reported that he did not show up for a game against Mazatlan.
This is about time when most teams suffered of this "illness", because many foreign players returns home for Christmas holidays, and general public appreciate so much to those players who show respect and professionalism to remain here and despite that "family days" .
So, Davis's story is not the only one, before him tywo Japanese players TETSU YOFU and YUSAKU IRIKI did the same with Guasave and both were suspended, ,eaning that tey could not play with any other team in the Caribbean confederation.

An getting back to business, in anoter results Mazatlan swept Navojoa in series as well as Mochis did the same with Mexicali Eagles.
So, with only 4 mores series remaining to end this second half, standing as of today looks as follows

STANDING W L AVG GA

CULIACAN 14 6 .700
OBREGON 12 8 .600 2.0
LOS MOCHIS 12 9 .572 2.5
