Mexican Legue News. Saves new record set

Puebla Tigers Reliever, Panamian Santos Hernandez, continued his pace to become the 2004 season record setter regarding saves, by getting 2 saves in one day for the third time , and become the only record holder, writing off the previous one, shared by Former Detroit Tigers reliever, Mr. Smoke, the late Aurelio Lopez (1977), former Blue Jay, Venezuelan Luis Aponte ( 1985), Martin Rivas (1985,86) and Mike Browning (1991), Hernandez has now , 24 saves in the season, and without blowing out a save yet.

Former Anaheim Angels, SS Benji Gil, joined the red hot Tijuana Toros, to reinforce their infield and offense, optioned from the Chicago Cubs,, and after being participating in AAA farm team Iowa, where he posted a .257 batting avg.,in 36 games played mostly in a utility role.

A Tijuana native, he immediately made his presence felt by boosting attendance to a full house 12,000 people.

A deadline for transactions has expired yesterday, and there was some roster moves , with Tijuana activating former major leaguers David Cortes ( Atlanta), Roger Deago and Jake Meyer ( San Diego), confirming that Tijuana wants the title.

Released Roberto Zambrano and Jim Bullinger, signed Jake Meyer, C Jorge Hadad ( Optioned by Orioles), David Cortés ( optioned by Detroit.), and Roger Deago,


Saltillo

Signed P Rigoberto Beltrán ( Optioned by Montreal), and Steve Bourgeois, released Rafael García.


Tigers

Signed Brian Looney, released Jorge Cortez and received Baudel Zambrano in loan from San Luis.


Laguna


Signed P Ben Rivera and released P Isabel Girón.

Monclova Yucatán

They traded P Alejandro Carrasco for P serafín Rodríguez. Monclava signed veteran OF Alonso Tellez.

Yucatán released P Hank Woodman and gave Eddy Diaz permision to go to Korea, signed P Isabel Giron and Amaury Garcia.

Aguascalientes

Signed Robert Marquez and released Dan Murray.

San Luis

Signed OF Roberto Zambrano and Pedro Cervantes released P Brian Looney and Raúl Rodarte.

Campeche

Signed OF Emil Brown , released Jairo Pineda

Tabasco

Signed Raúl Rodarte and released Aquiles Pinales.

México City Red Devils

Received P Marino Cota from Oaxaca

Monterrey

Received P Julio César Parra in loan from San Luis.


Veracruz Eagles, are improving their standing position by sweeping the Yucatan Lions and improved their record in this second round to 10- 8, first time ever in the season they play above .500, it seems that the manager change in the person of Marco Antonio Vazquez has worked out.

On a very close race, Miguel Flores of Monterrey, kept the pace as batting leader with a .396, over Demond Smith .395 and Noe Muñoz .393, in HR´s, Guillermo Garcia 19, Morgan Burkhart, Izzy Alcantara, Pat O´Sullivan and Eduardo Jimenez all with 17.

In RBI´s, Roberto Saucedo the leader with 70, followed by Morgan Burkhart, 68.

In pitching, Frank “ K´s “ Campos, still searching for an opportunity to pitch in the big leagues with Milwaukee, is 8-2 , 1.29 ERA and 67 K, all leading numbers

Santos Hernandez record just lasted few days, because Juan Quintanilla of the Tijuana Toros, just tied it last weekend, when he saved two games in one day for the third time in the season
