Phillies Journal -2003
by Max Blue

THEY'RE BACK

Most of the guys were back. The 1993 Phillies - Dykstra, Daulton, Inky, Eisy, the Krukker. Ten years since they fired the city to unheard of levels of excitement - more even than the 1980 world champions, who were here at the Vet a couple of weeks ago. Those 1980 champions struggled and groaned through 5 or 6 years of unbearable pain and suffering near-wins with a team stuffed with future Hall-of Famers before finally getting over the top. The 1993 team was a bolt of lightning - last in 1992 - never to get close again.

How does the current team stack up? Still trying to beat Atlanta. and one of the heroes of '93 - Schilling - now pitching for Arizona. Leading the Wild Card - putting up good pitching - trying to be tough like those '93 guys, but not quite getting it yet.

1993-2003

Ten years ago this year
the Phillies showed no fear.
Today that team came back to see
if this year's team could be
as good as them - they stayed to cheer.

Sunday July 20, 2003 Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia 3 Montreal 2 (37,000 fans)
