Newly acquired Gomez Martinez, from Panama, shone in his Chinese Professional Baseball League debut as the Brother Elephants dumped the Makoto Gida 9-1 before 5,540 fans at Shingchu Stadium last night. Now, let's see how he does in his second ball game...
Martinez (1-0-0), in his first year in the CPBL, pitched eight shutout innings, scattered four hits, walked one and struck out seven batters. Martinez was named the Game's MVP. His shutout bid was spoiled as Elephants reliever Shih-ping Chen gave up one earned run on a hit and two walks in one inning of work.
The Elephants got the ball rolling on Gida starter Ming-chin Lee (5-5-0) in the top half of the third inning with two runs center fielder Chih-yuen Chen launched his 11th home run of the season. Chen would eventually finish the night 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs while second baseman Shun-shian Fong went 2-for-5 with two runs plated. Right fielder Cheng-ming Pang finished the evening 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and four RBIs. Pang also hit his ninth homer of the year.
The Elephants and Gida will move to Taichung Stadium to play their game tonight (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time).
