Taiwan Baseball News: Elephants Feast On Reeling Agan
By Andrew Wong
First Securities Agan 3 Brother Elephants 8
Don't you just wish the Brother Elephants were in a position to challenge for the Chinese Professional Baseball League title? They are probably wishing the same thing as they are making up some ground off the last-place First Securities Agan.
The Elephants beat the Agan 8-3 last night at Shingcung Stadium before 4,492 fans and are now six games back of the CPBL-leading Sinon Bulls, who will play the President Lions at Tainan Stadium tonight(6:35 p.m. Taiwan time).
American native Jonathan Hurst gave up two runs, both earned, on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the 23-20-1 Elephants. He struck out five and did not walk a batter as he improved to 6-2-0. Hurst threw 107 pitches, 73 of them for strikes.
The Elephants scored seven runs in the first two innings as second baseman Shun-shian Fong went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk while short stop Rue-chang Chen finished the evening 2-for-3 with two runs plated, one RBI and a walk. Fong was named the Game's MVP. Right fielder Cheng-ming Pang went 1-for-2 with a base on ball and two RBIs while designated hitter Chin Jeh Lee went 1-for-3 with a run driven in.
Fellow American native Greg Bicknell fell to 0-7-0 for the 8-35-2 Agan as he scattered 12 hits and gave up all eight runs, six of which were earned, in seven innings of work. Bicknell walked five and struck out only two. He ended up throwing 123 pitches, 70 of them for strikes.
