Taiwan Baseball News: Whales catch Lions; Bennett, Guzman Moved Off 25-man Roster

China Trust Whales 13 Makoto Gida 3

American native Ken Henthorne gave up nine runs but only two of them were earned as the Makoto Gida committed four errors to lose a heartbreaker 13-3 last night at Tian Mu Stadium. It was newly acquired Henthorne's first game.

The Whales (17-10-2) scored four runs, three of which were earned, off Gida starter Shih-ching Tsai, who picked up the loss to drop to 2-4-0. Tsai gave up eight hits in six innings of work. Ming-chin Lee relieved Tsai in the seventh inning and only scattered two hits.

Center fielder Song-hsuen Yang went 2-for-6 with one run scored and three RBIs in the leadoff spot for the Whales. Second baseman Yueh-liang Lin finished the night 3-for-6 with two runs, third baseman Chien-wi Chen went 2-for-5 with two runs plated and one RBI and designated hitter Han-chou Tseng delievered the big blow with a two-run home run off Tsai. It was Tseng's second homer of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season as he finished at 1-for-5 with one run scored and two runs driven in.

Gida left fielder Chan-rong Chiou hit his third home run of the season with a two-run blast in the fourth inning of Whales starter Chien-san Kao, who never made it out of the fourth as he gave up three runs, all earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Chiou finished 1-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs for the 11-19-0 Gida.

With the win, the Whales have moved into a tie for second place in the CPBL with the President Lions, who lost 5-1 last night to the league-leading Sinon Bulls, who are three games up on both teams.

The Whales and Gida will play again tonight at Shingcung Stadium (5:05 p.m. Taiwan time).

Sinon Bulls 5 President Lions 1

The President Lions have now lost even more ground to the league-leading Sinon Bulls as they fell three games back last night with a 5-1 loss before 7,008 fans.

Dominican native Osvaldo Martinez pitched eight innings, giving up four hits and only one earned run. He improved to 6-2-0. Ramon Morel closed out the game with one flawless inning as the Bulls improved to 20-8-0.

The Bulls were up 2-1 until the top half of the seventh frame when they tagged three more off Lions starter Maximo Nunez, who dropped to 3-4-0. Nunez ended up throwing 6 2/3 innings while giving up eight hits to go with four runs, all earned. Reliever Po-chang Sheng then came in and gave up one earned run in 1/3 innings.

Bulls second baseman Chang-yi Huang went 2-for-3 while catcher Chun-chang Yeh finished the night 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Makoto Gida - The Gida have announced that foreign pitcher Shayne Bennett is no longer on the 25-man roster and that American native Ken Henthorne has taken his place. He is 182 cm tall and weighs 82 kg. Henthorne hits right and throws right and he has pitched in the CPBL before. Bennett was 0-2-0 with a 7.48 ERA in eight games.

China Trust Whales - Dominican native Geraldo Guzman was moved from the 25-man roster to make room for newly acquired right fielder Takashi Sakagawa from Japan. Sakagawa is 177 cm tall and weighs in at 78 kg and will wear No. 59. He throws and hits right. Meanwhile, Guzman was 1-2-0 with a 3.42 ERA in four games.
