Taiwan Baseball News: Bulls Finally Regain Lead as Jonathan Hurst Struggles

By Andrew Wong

Brother Elephants 3 Sinon Bulls 8

It takes an American to outduel an American. Jeffrey Andra outdueled Jonathan Hurst last night before 10,500 fans at Taichung Stadium to help the Sinon Bulls beat the Brother Elephants 8-3. With the win, the Bulls regained the Chinese Professional League lead by 0.5 games over the President Lions, who were doubled 4-2 by the Makoto Gida last night.

The Bulls got a solid performance from Andra, who gave up three earned runs in eight innings to improve to 5-0-0. Closer Ramon Morel pitched the scoreless ninth in a non-save situation. It was an opposite story for the Elephants (9-16-1) though as ace Jonathan Hurst gave up an uncharacteristic seven runs, four of them earned, in only two innings to fall to 1-2-0. That was by far the worst outing by Hurst since his return from the United States.

The Bulls scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the fifth to seal the deal. Third baseman Tai-shan Chang hit his ninth home run of the season off Hurst as he went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the winners, who improved to 17-7-0. Left fielder Song-yong Luo went 1-for-3 while scoring two runs.

The Elephants and Bulls will play again tonight at Taichung Stadium at 6:35 p.m. (Taiwan time) as the Bulls try to increase their lead over the Lions.

With their CPBL lead on the line last night, the President Lions were doubled up by the Makoto Gida 4-2 before 2,111 fans at Kaoshung Stadium.

Ming-chin Lee pitched seven inngs, giving up two earned runs, to pick up the win for the Gida. Lee was named the Game MVP afterwards and improved to 3-3-0. American native Michael Marchesano picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless two innings in relief of Lee.

The Leos tied the game 1-1 after the Gida got a run in their half of the third inning with a homer by designated hitter Lin-hung Chen, his sixth of the year. Chen finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

For the Gida, who improved to 11-16-0, right fielder Cheng-han Wu went 3-for-3 with two runs and one run driven in. With the win, the Gida moved ahead of the Brother Elephants in the CPBL standings and into fourth place. With the loss, the Lions now trail the Sinon Bulls by 0.5 games.
