Taiwan Baseball News: Bulls Gore Agan, Elephants Sink to Gida

By Andrew Wong

First Securities Agan 3 Sinon Bulls 8

What are the odds of having two pitchers with the same initials pitch in the same game? Probably not good. Venezuelan John Acosta started for the First Securities Agan while American native Jeffrey Andra started for the Sinon Bulls last night.

Andra went seven innings, giving up three runs, all earned, to pick up the win as he improved to 4-0-0 while Acosta gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings to fall to 0-3-0. Andra's ERA is at 1.52 while Acosta's is at 5.19.

The Bulls took exception to the Agan yelling "Toro, toro" as third baseman Tai-shan Chang went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs while his teammate, second baseman Chang-yi Huang, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Huang was named the Game MVP.

The Bulls scored three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to improve to 15-6-0 and are now 1.5 games back of the idle President Lions for the league lead. The Agan fell to 6-15-0 and are last in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

The two teams will go at it again tonight at 5:05 p.m. (Taiwan time) at Taichung Stadium.

Makoto Gida 4 Brother Elephants 2

Maybe the Brother Elephants should receive threatening letters for performing so poorly....The Elephants led 2-0 until the sixth inning when starter Hisanori Yokota started having trouble. He gave up three runs in the backend of his 7 2/3 inning performance as the Elephants were doubled 4-2 by the Makoto Gida before a huge crowd of 10,034 fans at Kaoshung. Yokota fell to 3-2-0 with the loss.

Shayne Bennett started the game for the Gida and pitched well, giving up two runs, all earned, in 6 1/3 innings but picked up a no-decision as his team had cold bats to start the game. American native Michael Marchesano came in and picked up the win with 2/3 innings to improve to 1-1-0. It was a trio of foreign pitchers for the Gida as fellow American Ned Daley pitched two innings for his second save of the 2003 season.

Second baseman Yi-shian Lin went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI to lead the Gida to their ninth win of the season (9-14-0). The Elephants sunk to 7-15-1.
