BLUE’S NEWS

Thursday, December 19, 2002

The top three stories out of Major League Baseball’s website on this hot stove day.

1. Pete Rose
We can’t get over it. Bud Selig is in negotiations. We all know the story. We all have opinions. Ken Rosenthal of the Sporting News notes that Pete’s initials are PR and that Selig needs to run a political campaign for the hearts and minds of the public to come back to baseball. Max Blue thinks that if at this time in the history of the nation the American public wants to like football better than baseball, it’s a pity, but in the end baseball is so far ahead of football in sheer beauty that the ultimate good sense of the American people will put it right no matter what Bud Selig does.

2. Jose Contreras
The ace of the Cuban baseball team has taken up residence in Nicaragua and is now eligible to sign with any team he wants. Baltimore may be first in line, remembering that this guy fanned 10 Orioles in 8 innings, but that was back in 1999.

3. Robert Johnson and Washington D.C.
He just put up $300 million to get an NBA franchise in Charlotte. God knows how many hundred million it will take to get a baseball franchise in theD.C. area, but Johnson says he intends to do it. Two other groups seem to have the same idea. It’s been 30 years since there was MLB in Washington. It seems longer than that.
