Matsui Contract May be Wrapped in a Tampering Investigation

According to Chunichi Sports, Commissioner Bud Selig and MLB lawyer Rob Manfred have suspicions about the way the NY Yankees have negotiated their agreement with the Yomiuri Giants and may launch a tampering investigation. "We're going to look at that contract sentence by sentence," Manfred promised.

There had been whispers of possible tampering by George Steinbrenner's charges (including by your humble scribe) and now it appears that Selig, who has what could charitably be called a "strained" relationship with the Yankkes boss, may bring those rumors to fruition.

In a way it's too bad, since Matsui himself is a pretty understated guy and there hasn't been even the faintest whiff of scandal about him ever (as opposed to this former Yomiuri teammates Masumi Kuwata and Kazuhiro Kiyohara, for example). Surely, there will be accusations from the Yankees that Selig would be using Matsui as a pretext to nail Steinbrenner on something in a show of naked revenge for being able to outspend the incompetent Brewers owner. Get out your popcorn, we may see two colossal assholes go at each other. Does Vince McMahon know about this?
