FLASH FLUSHED

Utley and J-roll went long,
a familiar, soul-pleasing song,
but on opening day, the Washington Nats
piled up the best stats,
and Flash Gordon was horribly wrong.

Monday, March 31, 2008, Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Washington -11, Philadelphia – 6.
WP – Rivera (1-0), LP – Gordon (0-1)
H – Hanrahan (1). BS –King (1).
HR – Milledge (1), 6th, 1 on.
Utley (1), 6th; Rollins (1), 7th, 1 on.

No, that's not the price of tickets at Citizens Bank Park, that's Flash Gordon's ERA at the moment.

Max, as a former catcher, how much do you blame Ruiz on him letting Johnson score thanks to the error? Myself, I'm reticent to blame him at all because (A) the run scores anyways on the double that follows and (B) the throw wasn't that far offline (it caromed off Johnson's foot if I recall).

Flash Gordon, Defender of Earth...
Didn't defend much for what it's worth...
Hope this isn't a reason
To expect a long season...
The Fightins' big guns
May need lots of runs...
Just to keep pace
And stay in the race...
