Italian Baseball News: Italian League Results for 2007, by Gene Newman

2007 ITALIAN LEAGUE RESULTS

In 2007, perennial pennant winner Italeri Bologna did not fare as well as in most seasons. Although they finished second by one game to pennant winner Cariparma Parma, they were knocked out of the 4-way league playoff. But so did pennant winner Parma.

Regular season third place finisher Monte dei Paschi Grosseto won the championship in a best-of-7 playoff with 4th-place finisher Caffe Danesi Nettuno. The scores of the seven games were:

1. Grosseto 3-0
2. Nettuno 5-3
3. Grosseto 7-0
4. Nettuno 4-0
5. Nettuno 4-3
6. Grosseto 4-3
7. Grosseto 5-4

The regular season records of the top four teams were:

Parma 28-14
Bologna 27-15
Grosseto 26-16
Nettuno 25-17

The bottom four teams were:

T&A San Marino 21-21
Telemarket Rimini 21-21
De Angelis Godo 12-30
Avigliana 8-34

The league leader in hitting was Maximiliano De Biase, right-handed 1st baseman/DH for San Marino, with a .360 average on 59 hits in 164 ABs.

Leading pitcher was 33-year-old Dominican Republic right-hander Jesus Matos for Bologna with a 10-3 record and 1.77 ERA. Saves leader was Grosseto’s righty Emiliano Gianneschi with six, but with a relatively poor 1-5 W-L record.

Finally a note for fans of Latino baseball, especially the Cuban League. Laidel Chapelli, a long-time .300 hitter in the Cuban League, played this season for Parma. His .300 average placed him 18th in the Italian League.
