Colombian Champion Takes Game #1 From Nicaraguan Champion 4-5
Tigres-Recordar de Cartagena, Liga Colombiana de Beisbol Profesional Champion, squeaked past Indios del Bóer, Liga Nicaraguense de Beisbol Champions, 4-3 at Managua’s Estadio Nacional Denis Martínez on Thursday night in front of excited 10,000 fans.
Carlos Villalobos led off the top of the ninth inning with a explosive solo home run that broke open a 3-3 tie.Alvaro Montes earned the win and Fabian Jimenez picked up the save for Tigres-Recordar. Ricardo Gomez of Indios took the loss.
Cartagena had four runs,eight hits, and three errors. Bóer amassed three runs, 10 hits, and two errors in the first game of a three game series.
The final two games will be played again at Estadio Nacional Denis Martínez on February 9 and 10.
The Colombian League is hoping that this series will be a showcase in their effort to join the Caribbean Baseball Federation and the annual Caribbean Series.
Caribbean Series commissioner Juan Francisco Puello Herrera announced that Colombia and Nicaragua have asked to be included in the Serie del Caribe.
Puella Herrera indicated that new teams would be considered when they prove competitive enough to face the present lineup of Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.
The original teams represented Cuba, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Puerto Rico.
