European Baseball News: 2006 League results from Italy, Germany and Sweden, by Gene Newman

With things beginning to wind down in the world of summer baseball, here is the first of several brief reports I’ll be doing on baseball outside the U.S.

This first report takes a look at some of the results in Europe.

THE GERMAN LEAGUES

In the South division, the top four teams were, in order: Regensburg Legionare; tied for second were Heidenheim Heidekopfe and Mainz Athletics; Saarlouis Hornets.

In the North division, the top four were: Solingen Alligators, Bonn Capitals, Paderborn Untouchables, and Cologne Cardinals.

Thos eight teams met in a playoff to determine the overall champion. The final placing (W-L) was: Heidenheim and Solingen tied for first (3-0); Mainz (3-1); Regensburg (3-2); Cologne (2-3); Bonn (1-3); and tied for last were Paderborn and Saarlouis (0-3).

SWEDEN

Most people in the U.S. probably do not know that baseball is played in places like Sweden, but there is, like Germany, Italy and others, a well-organized league there.

The 2006 season ended on September 3rd. The league champion was the Leksand Lumberjacks, followed by the Kariskoga Bats, Sundbyberg Heat, Tranas, Stockholm and Alby Stars.

ITALIAN LEAGUE

The regular season ended in the following order: Caffe Danesi Nettuno, Italeri Bologna, Colonie Maremma Groseto, De Angelis Godo, Telemarket Rimini, T&A San Marino, Comcor Modena, Ceci & Negri Parma, and Orel Anzo.
