MEXICO CITY - Usually when a baseball team has only three wins in ten days, they’re in trouble. Fortunately for the Yucatan Leones, their first round Mexican League playoff series with Mexico City bled into an eleventh day. In a Game Seven that carried over from a Thursday rain delay, the Leones and Diablos Rojos resumed their match in the fifth inning Friday at Foro Sol with the Diablos leading the Leones, 4-2. Yucatan went on to post three runs in the top of the ninth and held on for a 5-4 victory, giving the Lions a series upset win, four games to three. Yucatan will meet defending Liga champion Angelopolis in the LMB South Finals. The Tigres overcame a 2-1 first round deficit to score three straight wins over Oaxaca, eliminating the Guerreros, four games to two. The Leones and Tigres begin play Sunday.

In the Northern Division, Saltillo was taken to seven games before the Saraperos ended the set with a 2-1 win over Puebla in a road knucklebiter at the Pericos’ Estadio Hermanos Serdan on Thursday. Middle reliever Rafael Diaz, who had won just one game during the regular season, replaced starter Rigo Beltran in the fifth inning and went two scoreless innings to post the deciding win for Saltillo. Eric Knott, the Pericos’ most reliable starter (and last Sunday’s winning pitcher), came on in relief and gave up the Saraperos’ winning run to absorb the loss. Saltillo will now face a well-rested Monterrey team in the LMB North Finals on Saturday. The Sultanes required only five games to dispatch Tijuana, although the Potros ended the Sultanes’ 15-game winning streak compiled at the end of the regular season by winning the playoff opener, 4-3, in Monterrey on August 1. The Sultanes, who’ve dominated Mexican baseball this summer, haven’t played since eliminating the Potros, 7-6, last Sunday at Calimax Stadium in Tijuana.
