Japanese Baseball News: The Monday Report By Glenn Davies,Tokyo Japan
Central League News
This past week saw the Giants start to put some distance on the field with solid wins over the Dragons and strong starting pitching. Even in a loss to Chunichi over the weekend their ace starter Uehara pitched a 7 inning 1-hitter before giving up a HR to Fukudome. If the Giants can put together a few more timely hits they look unlikely to lose the division lead.Hiroshima and Yakult battled to a win a piece over the weekend with Hiroshima starter Douglass pitching a 1-hit 7 inning gem and Yakult acquisition LaRocca hitting 2-HRs in one game. Hanshin finished the weekend on a 3-game win streak after battering hapless Yokohama. Even the normally cheerful Yokohama closer Marc Kroon looked ruffled by the poor play of the Baystars. The TIgers rallied from behind for 4 runs and the win on Saturday and Imaoka homered twice to clinch a 5-2 win on Sunday night.
Pacific League News
The Lions continued hitting at a torrid pace through the week and have started to build a good lead in the division as Softbank has come a little unstuck with the strong play of the Fighters and Bluewave. Darvish threw a complete game in a 3-0 win over the Hawks during the week. Orix then unexpectantly took 2 games from the Hawks 2-0 and 6-2. Garcia hitting 2 HRs for Orix and their key starter Kawagoe picking up his second win of the season. Chiba has shown few signs of life and was badly mauled by cellar-dwellers Rakuten 13-0 this weekend. Rakuten ace Ichiba improving his record to 2-1 at their expense. Chiba slugger Agbayani the only highlight for the team thus far with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 10th yesterday to give Chiba a 7-4 win over the Eagles. The swagger and confidence that Chiba ended the Japan and Asian Series on last year has all but evaporated.
