By Glenn Davies,Tokyo. Japan vs. South Korea- March 5th 2006. Japan starter Shunsuke Watanabe looked sharp early and Japan took an early lead when Nobuhiko Matsunaka singled in a run in the first. But by the 5th inning the pitch count was getting up as Watanabe gave up a run and hit his second and third batters of the game before coming out. Japan led 2-1 until Lee Seung Yeop stepped to the plate in the eigth and smashed a two-run homer leading Korea to a 3-2 victory and secured them Asiafs No. 1 seed for Round 2 of the World Baseball Classic, which begins in Anaheim on March 12.

By Glenn Davies,Tokyo. Japan vs Taiwan- March 4th 2006 Japan beat Taiwan 14-3 on Saturday at the Tokyo Dome. Hitoshi Tamura continued his strong hitting performance against China with his second HR, a 2-run shot in the 1st. Daisuke Matsunaka pitched well, although he gave up a number of balks, for the win.
Japan vs China- March 3rd 2006 Japan beat China 18-2. China showed some promise with a two-run home run from catcher Wang Wei in the bottom of the fourth but then it was all Japan. Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Kosuke Fukudome and Hitoshi Tamura hitting homers in a 15 hits 18 run called game.
