Nicaraguan League “Extranjeros” rocket to 42%

The percentage of foreign players in the Nicaraguan Professional Baseball League (Liga Nicaraguense de Beisbol de Profesional) rose from 21.6% in the 2004/05 season to 42% in the 2005/06 season. This current season is the LNBP’s second since its return to professional baseball.

24 out of 111 total players were of foreign nationality in 2004/05 while 58 out of 138 were “extranjeros’ in 2005/06. Panama represented half of the foreigners with 12 players in the first year but dropped to five in the second season. Conversely, Dominican representatives rose from one to 15; Cubans climbed from four to 12; and USA players jumped from two to ten.

This year, Indios del Bóer have the most foreign players with 23 while Tigres del Chinandega have the least with 10. Chinandega has the best record in the league in 2005/06 and Boers have the worst.

The original LNBP was in existence from 1956 to 1967. Some of the stars included Jim Kaat, Doug Rider, Joe Hicks, Bert Campaneris, Mike Cuellar, Marvin Throneberry, Dick Scott, Phil Reagan, Jack Kralick, Jim McManus, Héctor López, Lou Jackson, Carl Emery, Minervino Rojas, Richie Scheinblum, Diego Seguí, and Ferguson Jenkins..
