GLOPCOM ALL OVER AGAIN

The Phillies clawed and scratched to tie,
Can someone out there tell me why
Manuel took Lieber out?
Adams gives up a three-run clout,
And once again our spirits die.

May 2, 2005. Shea Stadium, New York, New York.
Mets - 5, Phillies – 1.

GLOPCOM is a concept forced upon us last year when then manager Larry Bowa chronically lost games by poor decisions. It means Game Lost On Poor Coaching Or Managing. The 2005 Phillies are off to a bad start, one might argue due primarily to the fact that Jim Thome is suffering with a bad back and can’t hit. Given this it is imperative that new manager Charlie Manuel’s decisions be flawless. Until last night we couldn’t be sure, but now we know—Manuel is Bowa all over again. John Lieber pitched beautifully for six innings, matching the peerless Pedro Martinez pitch for pitch. In the seventh, Chase Utley doubled to lead off, moved to third on a hit to right by David Bell and scored to tie the game at one on an infield out by Tomas Perez (playing first base for Thome). Lieber was still strong after 79 pitches so why did Manuel pinch hit for him in a tie game? Why did Manuel allow Terry Adams to pitch to Carlos Beltran when he had lefthander Aaron Fultz ready in the bullpen? Beltran is a switch hitter but he has no right-handed homeruns this year. He now has four left-handed after slugging an Adams hanging slider up against the Shea Sadium scoreboard with two men on base. GLOPCOM.

GLOPCOM sticks,
Like fleas and ticks,
Hard to shake or scrape or scratch,
Before here comes another batch.
It will only go away
When different people start to play
And light a spark with smart descisions
That eliminate cluless visions...
