MAKE UP IN CHICAGO

On what should have been a day off before facing Atlanta at home tomorrow night, the Phillies must fly to Chicago to make up a game with the White Sox that was rained out back in June. In June homeruns flew all over the place; in two games 48 runs were scored, 24 by each team (you could look it up). But that was then. When the teams faced off today the Sox were missing from injury Frank (Big Hurt) Thomas, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee, and Paul Konerko. Brett Myers should have breezed. So how come the patched up Sox scored nine runs? Because the Phillies played ugly baseball. Lieberthal botched two run-downs, Roberto Hernandez blew a 6-5 lead in the sixth with some atrocious pitches, Todd Jones coughed up a two-run backbreaker in the 8th, making Thome’s two-run 9th inning pop fly homer to left irrelevant.

Nobody’s talking, but anybody with eyes can see that Thome is still playing with sore hands- can’t get around on down the middle fast balls? Thome?

OUCH AGAIN

Yet another one painful to watch.
It feels like I’ve been hit in the crotch.
We scored eight runs for Ruth’s sake,
Hey bullpen, how much does it take?
Can we please turn it up a new notch?

Monday, August 30, 2004. U.S. Cellular Field (aka Comiskey Park) Chicago, Illinois
Chicago – 9, Philadelphia - 8
