AUSTRALIA VS CUBA FOR THE GOLD

Australia – 1, Japan – 0
Chris Oxspring did it. He blanked Japan for 6 2/3 innings and would have finished the 7th but for two errors by his shortstop. Lefty Jeff Williams relieved to get the final out, then retired the final six in a row for the save. Williams pitches professionally for the Hanshin Tigers in the Japanese League. Australia scored its run in the 6th on a two-out single by Brendan Kingman off Japanese flame-thrower Daisuke Matsuzaka who fanned 13 in eight innings.

Cuba – 8, Canada – 5
Canada led 3-2 into the 8th when Cuba broke out for six runs. The Canadians fought back in the 9th to score two and bring the tieing run to the plate. The game ended on a dramatic running catch by Cuban leftfielder Frederick Cepeda.
