Olympic Baseball - August 18, 2004

Olympic Baseball August 18, 2004

The medal round has not begun, but in round robin play Japan beat Cuba for a historic first time in Olympic competition after losing five times in earlier years.

Japan – 6, Cuba – 3

Daisuke Matsuzaka – winning pitcher
Kazuhiro Wada, Kenji Jojima, Norihiro Nakamura – home runs

The Greek Olympic baseball team, backed by Greek-American Peter Angelos, owner of the Baltimore Orioles, is made up of 20 Americans and 2 Canadians, all with Greek family backgrounds. Remember Clay Bellinger of the NY Yankees?

The “Greeks” gave Cuba a scare, scoring 3 in the ninth before losing 5-4.
