BULLPEN UP

No wonder Bowa has no fingernails. Top of the ninth. Phillies up 6-3. Worrell gets two out but has runners at second and third with Ryan Klesko at bat. Time out. Bowa knows that Padres’ manager Bochy has used all his position players and the pitcher is due up next. He gives Klesko a pass, never mind he is the tying run. Bleep the book. Bochy looks for his best hitting pitcher off the bench. It’s Adam Eaton. A rhyme runs through my head – Beaten by Eaton. Eaton walks to force in a run. Bowa sulks. So do I. It’s now 6-4 and the go-ahead run is on base, the tying run at second. Another catcher named Mike is at the plate. Miguel Ojeda. He raps a sharp ground ball up the middle. It looks like a tie game. Rollins snares it with a lunge and flips a way too casual backhand to Utley to end the game. We win. Bowa is a genius. Had ‘em all the way.

Perez got his third and Rollins his first,
Bruce Bochy thought he was cursed.
Padilla won again
With help from Worrell and the pen.
It’s okay for the lead to be nursed.

Sunday May 23, 2004. Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia (44,000 fans -7th sellout)
Philadelphia – 6, San Diego – 4.
