GLOPMOC AT THE BANK

“Don’t throw it Vicente!”
The cry went up all around the Delaware valley where thousands of people who care about the Phillies were on their feet screaming at their television screens. Padilla was sagging and we all knew it. It was the sixth inning and the Phillies had a 3-1 lead on Randy Johnson and the Arizona Diamondbacks. D-back runners at second and third, two out and a 3-2 count on pinch hitter Carlos Baerga. Padilla had thrown close to 100 pitches and he was hell-bent to make one final pitch and take the rest of the night off, content to turn it over to all those million dollar arms in the Phillies’ bullpen. But Baerga wouldn’t go away. At 3-2 he fouled off six pitches, gaining confidence with every one. When he drilled an inside curve ball into the right field seats 20 feet foul you knew what was coming. “Attention Bowa! Attention Lieberthal! First base is open. Put the assassin on before he kills us!” We might as well have been talking to a television screen. You expect to lose when you face Randy Johnson, but not like that. Not like that.

Carlos Baerga went deep
Our manager and catcher sound asleep.
We had this game in the bag
Until Bowa’s brain went into sag.
Our hopes buried under a 3-run heap. Bleep.

Saturday May 1, 2004. Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Arizona – 6, Philadelphia – 4.
