This Week's Highlights
April 16, 2004: Abe Breaks Consecutive Home Run Mark
Hiroshima Carp starter Hiroki Kuroda (2-1) pitched a complete game to beat the Yomiuri Giants 7-2 at Hiroshima Stadium, but Giants catcher Shinnosuke Abe established a new record for home runs in consecutive games by a catcher.
Abe's second-inning solo homer (8) off Kuroda gave the slugging catcher longballs in six consecutive games and broke the previous mark of five, held by Katsuya Nomura for the 1970 Nankai Hawks. The next day, Abe had a chance to tie the all-position record of 7 consecutive games, held by Randy Bass for the 1986 Hanshin Tigers and Sadahara Oh for the 1972 Yomiuri Giants, but he went 2-for-4 with 2 singles in a 5-4 loss to Hiroshima.
April 18, 2004: High Fives for Suzuki
Fives were wild for Ken Suzuki, who went 5-for-5 with 5 rbi's in a 7-6 Yakult Swallows victory over the Hanshin Tigers at Jingu Stadium. Suzuki's fifth hit yielded his fifth rbi and was a game-winning "sayonara" knock off Hanshin pitcher Jeff Williams (0-1) in the bottom of the ninth. Another of Suzuki's five hits was a two-run homer (3). When did he hit it? You guessed it, inning number five.
