No Hits, No Runs History in Mexican League By Carlos Fragoso

Now that Rafael Roque of Puebla Tigers. threw a no-no, it was the 88th time, that ocurred in league´s history, which started to register records since 1937, having in Cuban and Negro Leagues all star pitcher Martin Dihigo, the first to achieve such a thing, in Sep 16th of 1937, when his team Veracruz Eagles, beaten Nogales, 4-0 in Veracruz Stadium, and the last before Roque to also accomplished the no-no, was Obed Vega, of the Cancun Lobstermen who defeated Campeche Pirates 1-0 in 7 innings, back in June 13th, 2002.

Among those games, there is a 3 pitchers no-no, when in March 24th, 1971, Francisco Maytorena,Hector Diaz and Nicolas Garcia, threw it in 7 innings. An important issue here is,that Tigers were using a pitching system of 3 or more per game, in regardless of what the score was.

Record for Most no-no´s thrown in Mexican league is owned by LHP Herminio Dominguez, with 3,in 1982,1985 and 1986..

Former major leaguer LHP, Narciso Elvira holds and has been the only pitcher who has two no-no´s in one season, when pitching for the Campeche Pirates in 1999, beat Cancun 5-0, in March 20, and repeated against Laredo Owls with a 1-0 win in 7 innings.

Talking about perfect games, there has been a total of 8 games, being American pitcher Don Heinkel, the last one to get it, when he beat Mexico City Red Devils by 7-0, in Campeche in June 2, 1992.

For Rafael Roque, now 32 years old, it was his 3rd no-no of his career, having thrown the first one in 1995 playing for Licey Tigers, in dominican winter ball, and the second one, in 1996, while playing A ball in USA, and before getting the calll up with Brewers, to whom he played from 1998 to 2000..

The goal here, my baseball friends is to be able to get you to know, a little bit of Mexican Baseball history, regards

As a trivia note, Elvira tossed a no hitter for Kintetsu against Seibu at Osaka Dome on 6/20/2000. It is still the last no no pitched in the Pacific League. Unfortunately, aside from that one flash of brilliance, Elvira struggled in Japan.
