Saito First in 18 Years to 20 in PL in Victory Over Lotte
Daiei Hawks righthander Kazumi Saito made Pacific League history Tuesday at Fukuoka Dome, as he became the first 20 game winner since the Hankyu Braves Yoshinori Sato in 1985 and also tied for the ERA title with a complete game eight hitter against the Chiba Lotte Marines in a 4-1 triumph.
Submariner Shunsuke Watanabe started for Lotte and tossed eight solid innings, giving up four runs on seven hits to finish his season at 8-4.
Saito had three somewhat major jams in the contest, the first being in the second, when DH Koichi Hori singled to center and third baseman Jose Fernandez singled to right. But a groundout and two strikeouts cured that hiccup and it remained scoreless.
Daiei finally broke through in the fifth, as third basemanInamine singled to right and, one out later, centerfielder Yudai Deguchi drilled a shot off the leftfield wall and beat a hasty path to third for an RBI triple. Leftfielder Takeshi Tsuji grounded to shortstop, who went to the plate to try to nail Deguchi, but he beat the tag and it was 2-0 Hawks.
Lotte tried to mount some resistance in the sixth, as second baseman Kazuya Harai doubled into the rightfield corner and first baseman Kazuya Fukuura spanked a single to right. Hori grounded to short and Harai crossed to make it 2-1 Daiei.
In the eighth, Lotte saw Harai reach on a one out infield hit and Fukuura singled to right. But Saito stepped it up once more and induced a pair of ground balls to keep his lead.
Daiei then pulled away, as rightfielder Hiroshi Shibahara singled to center and DH Nobuhiko Matsunaka sealed the RBI title and the game when he torched a Watanabe delivery into the centerfield stands for a 4-1 advantage. Saito then held Lotte to one hit in the ninth and he and Seibu ace Daisuke Matsuzaka became the first two men to tie for the ERA title ever.
The last time a Hawks hurler accumulated 20 shiroboshi in a campaign was during the Nankai days in 1976, when Shinichi Yamada pulled it off. No Hawks southpaw has won 20 since Nobuo Nakatani in1948, so both Toshiya Sugiuchi and Tsuyoshi Wada have something to shoot for in 2004.
Catcher Kenji Johjima became the first catcher in 40 years to play in every inning of every game. Now we'll see if that and his finishing second in the RBI race will earn him an MVP nod.
For Lotte, Fernandez was 1-4 with two strikeouts and is at .306.

Four Run Giants Fifth Prevents Record Season Series Win for Hanshin
After starter Hisanori Takahashi looked rusty after being out of action for more than two months due to injury, Masanori Hayashi came on and fashioned four scoreless innings while the Giants put four runs across in the fifth to top Trey Moore and the Hanshin Tigers 6-2. Moore was terrible, as he went 4.2 innings and was tattooed for six runs, five earned, on eight hits to absorb the defeat.
Hanshin surged out to an early lead, as second baseman Yoshinori Okihara singled to center and, one out later, leftfielder Tomoaki Kanemoto singled to right. First baseman Katsumi Hirosawa singled to right to usher Okihara in and it was 1-0.
Moore got through a two on, one out dilemma in the second and his batterymate, Akihiro Yano, gave him some breathing room when he mashed a shot into the leftfield bleachers to make it 2-0.
But in the fourth, Giants rightfielder Yoshinobu Takahashi got aboard on an error by shortstop Atsushi Fujimoto and first baseman Kazuhiro Kiyohara insideouted a Moore pitch into the rightfield seats to knot it at 2-2.
Moore then continued to have a rough time going through the Yomiuri batting order the second time in the fifth, as shortstop Kenji Fukui flamed a one out double down the leftfield line and, one out later, third baseman Daisuke Motoki singled to right for an RBI. Takahashi slashed a double to leftcenter. Hayashi singled to left to plate Motoki. Akira Etoh singled to center for another tally. Hiroshi Ishige replaced Moore. Pinch hitter Takayuki Saito walked. Second baseman Toshihisa Nishi singled to center to cash Hayashi in and Yomiuri was in control at 6-2.
Hanshin had two on with one out in the sixth, but a double play ball terminated that charge. They then had two on and one out in the eighth and another twin killing proved fatal to that opportunity.
Julio Santana came on to begin the ninth for Yomiuri and obtained two outs, but then he walked reserve shortstop Teruyoshi Kuji and substitute catcher Toshihiro Noguchi singled to right. However, third baseman Backup third baseman Atsushi Kataoka flied out to left and it was "game setto."
By losing, Hanshin muffed a chance to win a team record 18th game in a season against their Tokyo rival.
After the end of the match, Hanshin manager Senichi Hoshino gave a bouquet of flowers and some words of encouragement to departiing Giants helmsman Tatsunori Hara.
Tigers centerfielder Norihiro Akahoshi stole his 60th bag, the first man to reach that plateau since Hiroshima great Yoshihiko Takahashi in 1985, when he lightfingered 73.
For Yomiuri, leftfielder Chris Latham was 0-4 with three strikeouts and is at .221.
For Hanshin, third baseman George Arias was 0-3 with a walk and is at .266.

Miwa Three Run Walkoff Homer Overshadows Rhodes 51st Homer
Kintetsu Buffaloes leftfielder Tuffy Rhodes pocketed his third homer title when he parked his 51st in the eighth, but Orix catcher Takashi Miwa seized the day when he connected for a three run homer in the bottom of the 11th off of reliever Koichi Misawa to lend his side a 9-7 victory Tuesday at Kobe Green Stadium. That Kintetsu was only about .500 against the worst team in the league shows that Kintetsu has some work to do this offseason, especially with its pitching.
Makoto Suzuki started for Orix and was fighting himself, as he required 106 pitches to get through five innings of three run ball on six hits.
Shogo Yamamoto, though, started for Kintetsu and was roughed up for five runs in three innings on nine hits. But thanks to Orix' non-existent pen, he didn't take the kuroboshi.
The Blue Wave machine gunned Yamamoto for the upper hand in the first, as leftfielder Ryoji Aikawa and third baseman Koichi Oshima each singled to right and centerfielder Yoshitomo Tani singled to center to drive Aikawa in, Oshima wheeling into third. Second baseman Jose Ortiz grounded to short and Oshima crossed to make it 2-0.
Kintetsu then got off the shnide in the top of the second, as second baseman Akihito Igarashi doubled down the rightfield line with two outs and was pinch run for by Koji Yamasaki. Third baseman Masashi Miki singled to left to send Yamasaki in and it was 2-1 Orix.
Yamamoto was thumped again in the second, as first baseman Kazuhiko Shiotani singled to left and shortstop Mitsutaka Goto singled to right. Catcher Daisuke Maeda singled to center for an RBI. Rightfielder Daisuke Hayakawa singled to center as well to plate Goto to widen it to 4-1 Orix.
But Suzuki walked shortstop Masahiro Abe walked with one out and rightfielder Koichi Isobe whistled a shot into the rightfield corner for an RBI triple. DH Hirotoshi Kitagawa and first baseman Kenshi Kawaguchi both walked to load the bases. Leftfielder Shinji Shimoyama struckout and Yamasaki popped out and it stayed at 4-2 Orix.
Tani, though, opened the third by creaming one into the leftfield seats and it was 5-2 Orix.
Suzuki struckout the side after a double in the fourth, but in the fifth, Kitagawa walked with one away and Kawaguchi smacked a shot off the glove of Shiotani, Kitagawa hustling to third on the play. Shimoyama grounded to second and Kitagawa strode in to put the score at 5-3 Orix.
Kintetsu substitute leftfielder Daisuke Masuda then got off to centerfield against Hiroshi Kobayashi in the seventh to make it 5-4.
An inning later, Rhodes pinch hit for catcher Akihito Fujii in the eighth and dynamited a 90mph fastball from Jun Hagiwara way up into the rightfield stands and it was even at 5-5.
The Buffs then took their first lead of the game in the ninth, as Masuda walked with one away and Kitagawa singled to right. One out later, pinch hitter Osamu Hoshino singled to left to spur Masuda across the plate for a 6-5 advantage.
But Hisashi Aikyo was on the defensive in the bottom of the inning rightaway, as Aikawa singled to left and was sacrificed to second. Ikuro Katsuragi rattled the rightfield fence with a double and it was 6-6. Ortiz was intentionally walked. Yamasaki lined one at Aikyo, who went to first for the double play and it went into extra innings.
Kintetsu edged out in front again in the 11th, when Kitagawa singled to center with two outs and went to second on a wild pitch by Atsushi Kubota. Kawaguchi was intentionally walked. Backup catcher Tetsuya Matoyama singled to center to redeem Kitagawa to make it 7-6 Buffs.
But in the home turn, Hayakawa leadoff with a double down the leftfield line and went to third on a groundout. Reserve third baseman Tomotaka Tamaki walked. Miwa, pinch hitting for Katsuragi, then got something real hittable and poleaxed it into the leftfield seats and the home folks went home happy.
Rhodes' negotiations with Kintetsu are reportedly rocky right now, but he wants to ostensibly stay with them. "I'm leaving it all up to my agent," he said.
For Kintetsu, Rhodes was 1-2 with a walk and an RBI and is at .276.
For Orix, Ortiz was 0-3 with two walks and an RBI and is at .253.

Ishido Now 4-0 With 6-3 Victory Over Hiroshima
Tom Davey helped do himself in Tuesday at Meiji Jingu Stadium, as his error on a sac bunt helped open the floodgates for a five run inning that resulted in a 6-3 victory over the Hiroshima Carp by the Yakult Swallows. Rookie Katsutoshi Ishido went six okay innings of three run ball on six hits four his fourth win in a row.
So let's get right to it, as Swallows centerfielder Mitsuru Manaka singled to left in the first and shortstop Shinya Miyamoto laid down what was supposed to be a sacrifice. Davey picked it up and then chucked it past first baseman Takahiro Arai to put runners on second and third. Third baseman Akinori Iwamura singled to left and boom, 2-0 Yakult. Davey then wild pitched Iwamura to second. Leftfielder Alex Ramirez singled to left and Iwamura set the controls for the heart of home plate. One out later, catcher Atsuya Furuta singled to center. Following another out, second baseman Noriyuki Shiroishi walked to load the bases. Ishido then administered the big blow of the game when he singled to left to hail Furuta and Shiroishi in for a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the second, Hiroshima shortstop Andy Sheets walked and leftfielder Tomonori Maeda singled to center. That would die, though, as three flyouts snuffed it.
Davey attempted to neutralize Ishido's knock by taking him into the leftfield bleachers kicking off the third. One out later, rightfielder Itsuki Asai homered to right and it was 5-2 Yakult.
In the fourth, Arai looped one to right that bounced away from rightfielder Ryuji Miyade for a one out triple. One out later, catcher Yoshiyuki Ishihara singled near the line in left and the Swallows lead was softened to two at 5-3.
Ramirez did a rendition of "Long Stick Goes Boom" for the folks in the leftfield stands to ease the pressure on Ishido a little at 6-3.
Hirotoshi Ishii induced a double play ball to foil a two on, one out Carp opportunity in the eighth and closer Shingo Takatsu lured pinch hitter Shigeru Morikasa into another twin killing with one on and one out in the ninth and the curtain came down on this baby. Yakult is now a game up on the Giants for third place.
The press believes that Takatsu will win the Fireman of the Year. His only real competition is Katsuhiro Nagakawa, who has fewer saves and is on the dl right now, so they are probably correct.
Hiroshima has more or less ensured that it will finish in the second division for the sixth consecutive year. Yet no rumblings that manager Koji Yamamoto is on the hot seat, whereas Tatsunori Hara and Haruki Ihara got canned despite winning records.
For Yakult, Ramirez was 2-4 with two RBIs and is at .330.
For Hiroshima, Sheets was 1-3 with a walk and is at .315.

Ochoa Three Run Homer Breaks It Open for 12th Hirai Win
Ex-Yokohama Bay Stars catcher Motonobu Tanishige continues to make life miserable for his former team, as he stroked a pair of homers and drove in three runs against them, but the straw that broke the camel's back was centerfielder Alex Ochoa's three run clout to left in the fifth that turned a close fight into a vehicle for Dragons starter Masafumi Hirai to cruise to his 12th victory 8-2.
Takashi Saito started for Yokohama and was battered for all eight Dragons runs on 11 hits in only five innings. In addition, word has come down that he may have arthroscopic shoulder surgery in the offseason, so pitching continues to be Yokohama's biggest headache.
Chunichi was on Saito like a bad suit from the beginning, as shortstop Masahiko Morino singled to center to start the game and went to second on a sac bunt before going to third on a groundout. Third baseman Kazuyoshi Tatsunami singled to left and it was 1-0.
But the Stars surmounted that in the home segment, as second baseman Hitoshi Taneda singled to center with one away and leftfielder Takanori Suzuki went midieval on a Hirai offering for a homer to left and a 2-1 advantage.
However, Tanishige took a Saito slider to the downs in left commencing the second and it was even at 2-2.
In the third, Chunichi would go in front, as rightfielder Kouske Fukduome singled to right and, one out later, sailed home on Ochoa's double into the rightfield corner. Following another out, Tanishige rebounded a shot off the centerfield wall for a long RBI single and it was 4-2 Dragons.
Yokohama had two on with nobody out in the fourth, but a strikeout, a flyout and a lineout frustrated that comeback ambition and the Stars wouldn't be heard from again until the eighth.
In the meantime, Chunichi went back on the chain gang in the fifth, as second baseman Masahiro Araki singled to left and went to second on a groundout. Tatsunami walked. Ochoa then monstered one into the leftfield stands and it was 7-2. One out later, Tanishige blistered one into the leftfield seats as well to make it 8-2.
Hirai would then have one more test in the eighth before leaving, as shortstop Takuro Ishii singled to right with one out, backup second baseman Seiichi Uchikawa singled to left and Suzuki singled to right to pack the sacks. But first baseman Tyrone Woods lined out to short and rightfielder Katsuaki Furuki grounded out to first. They went down meekly in the ninth and it was in the books.
Tanishige is hotter than a saharan summer right now, as, during his current nine game hitting streak, he is 11-21 with three homers and nine RBIs (.523).
For Yokohama, Woods was 1-4 and is at .272.
For Chunichi, Ochoa was 4-4 with four RBIs and is at .294.

Team Reports
Yomiuri It's not like owner Tsuneo Watanabe would allow it to happen anyway, but ace Koji Uehara told the press that he won't ask to be posted. The Atlanta Braves had been, for some reason, sniffing around Uehara, leading to speculation that he wanted to jump to MLB well before he becomes eligible for free agency. He does indeed want to try his luck in the states at some point, but when that may happen is still unknown.
Chunichi Some reporters tracked new manager Hiromitsu Ochiai down on a golf course in Shizuoka Prefecture and the former Triple Crown winner emphasized that he intends to do things his way, as he has always done. He has reportedly been signed for three years. His wife Nobuko, who is also known as something of an individualist herself, has given her husband the green light to get back into baseball fulltime....Outfielder Alex Ochoa will be retained by the club for 2004.
Hiroshima Infielder Takuya Kimura will not use his free agent rights to leave the team, as he apparently wants to stay.
Seibu Rookie Taketoshi Goto will have surgery on his left hand to fix a broken bone....The Lions may acquire infielder Masahiro Kawai. What a waste of roster space.
Daiei Reliever Matt Skrmetta and infielder Bryant Nelson were released. Also getting their walking papers are catcher Shunsuke Sugiyama and Taiwanese slugger Chen Wen-ping....Rookie righthander Nagisa Arakaki threw 40 pitches in the bullpen Tuesday. He says that he still can't put his lower body into his pitches yet.
Nippon Ham Takahito Nomura, reecently released by the Fighters, says he plans to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic this winter. That should fatten a few averages.
Orix The team has signed new skipper Haruki Ihara for three years. Former Seibu outfielder Makoto Sasaki will also be hired as a coach....According to Hochi Sports, both Roosevelt Brown and Jose Ortiz will be back with the team next season.
