Taiwan Baseball News: Burgos Off Roster As Teams Cut Foreigners To Three

By Andrew Wong

Trial times are over for foreign players.

On Aug. 31, teams were required to decide which three foreign players they will keep on their starting roster for the remainder of the season.

The Brother Elephants decided to keep pitchers Shin Nakagomi (Japan; 9-8-0, 2.84 ERA), Hisanori Yokota (Japan; 14-2-0, 2.73 ERA) and Jonathan Hurst (USA; 10-4-0, 2.62 ERA). No surprise here but the odd man out is Gomez Martinez who was 4-3-1 with a 1.69 ERA in nine games.

The Sinon Bulls also decided to keep their three foreign pitchers - Jeffrey Louis Andra (USA; 14-1-0, 1.82 ERA), Osvaldo Martinez (Dominican Republic; 11-10-0, 3.11 ERA) and closer Ramon Morel (Dominican Republic; 4-1-1 with 21 saves, 0.81 ERA).

The President Lions decided to dismiss American pitcher John Burgos in favour of Jose Parra (Dominican Republic; 2-0-0, 1.13 ERA), John Frascatore (USA; 5-2-0, 1.82 ERA) and infielder/outfielder Hiroaki Yoshimi (Japan; .340 batting average in 74 games played). Burgos was 5-4-0 with a 2.76 ERA in ten games since coming back from the United States.

The China Trust Whales decided to retain only two foreigners - Hiroaki Nakayama (Japan; 11-4-0, 2.11 ERA) and Maximo Rosa (Dominican Republic; 3-3-1, 3.02 ERA).

The First Securities Agan haven't had much success all season with foreign players and they kept Lincoln Mikelsen (USA; 0-2-0, 2.96 ERA), Gabriel Ozura (Dominican Republic; 1-11-0, 4.54 ERA) and Claudio Galva (Dominican Republic; 2-5-1, 3.96 ERA). Mikelsen had been playing baseball in China when he was signed by the CPBL Agan.

The Makoto Gida retained Emir Kamar (Mexico; 0-0-0, 1.80 ERA in one game pitched), Shad Williams (USA; 0-2-0, 7.00 ERA) and Jose Hernandez (Mexico; 0-1-0, 7.11 ERA).

Kwei-yu Huang had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning last night at Stadium before 7,611 fans as the China Trust Whales picked up a 6-5 win over the Brother Elephants.

Jung-lin Chi led off the ninth with a single off Elephants pitcher Jonathan Hurst (10-4-0), who had come into relief. A few outs later, Huang hit a game-winning double and was named the Game's MVP.

Chao-huang Lin (2-1-1) picked up the win for the Whales with two innings of relief in which he surrendered one run, earned, on three hits.

Elephants left fielder Ming-hsian Lin had a 2-for-4 night in the leadoff spot to go along with three runs scored while second baseman Shun-shian Fong went 2-for-3. Right fielder Cheng-ming Pang continued his hot streak with a 3-for-4 performance including a double and three runs plated. First baseman Fong-an Tsai went 2-for-5 with a run scored and 3B Huai-shan Chen finished the evening 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

Two Japanese natives started the ball game for both teams and Elephants sensation Hisanori Yokota gave up five runs, three of them earned, on seven hits and five walks in 5 2/3 uncharacteristic innings of work. Hiroaki Nakayama was much better as he surrendered two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits in six frames.
