Taiwan Baseball News: Chen Decides Game With Round-Tripper

By Andrew Wong

President Lions 4 Sinon Bulls 2 (10 innings)

You just knew it was going to be a good pitching matchup between President Lions rookie Wei-luen Pan and Sinon Bulls sensation Jeffrey Andra. Last night's game at Shingchu Stadium was decided after they both hit the showers after the seventh inning.

Lions right fielder Lien-hung Chen hit his 10th home run of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season, a solo blast, as he took Bulls reliever Chi-shian Ho (2-7-1) deep in the top half of the tenth inning for one of his team's two runs. This propelled the Leos to a 4-2 victory and Chen was the recipient of the Game MVP award.

Pan started for the Lions and surrendered two runs, both of them earned, on seven hits and one walk in seven frames. He struck out two batters. Lung-wei Kao followed with three innings of shutout ball to record the win. Meanwhile, on the other side of the hill, Andra gave up one run, which was unearned, on seven hits and two walks in seven innings of work. The soft-spoken southpaw also picked up a no-decision as he fanned four.

Lions third baseman Jia-rong Wu went 2-for-4 with a double and a free pass while Chen capped his night with a his only hit, the home run, in four at-bats. He also walked once and scored three times. Pinch-hitter Ming-ching Luo, the regular designated hitter, had a double in his pinch-hit at-bat.

For the Bulls, short stop Jau-han Cheng hit his 11th homer of the year off Pan. It was a solo round-tripper.

With the win, the Lions are now just 1.5 games back of the CPBL-leading Brother Elephants who have a gift victory tonight as they visit the First Securities Agan at Kaoshung Stadium (6:35 p.m., Taiwan time). The Bulls are five games back in third place in the race for the second-half title.
