Taiwan Baseball News: Andra Knows What It Takes After Long, Tough Road

By Andrew Wong

First Securities Agan 0 Sinon Bulls 3

After a long and tough career in the minor leagues, American native Jeffrey Andra knows what it takes to win. Last night, the 28-year-old left-handed ace from Shawnee Mission, Kansas, pitched eight shutout innings en route to helping the Sinon Bulls blank the First Securities Agan 3-0 before 1,780 fans at Shingchu Stadium.

Andra, a University of Oklahoma product and a San Francisco Giants draftee in the mid-1990s, scattered four hits, walked one and struck out six batters to pick up the win. He is 14-1-0 and was named the Game's MVP last night. Wen-pin Hsu pitched a scoreless ninth to record his second save of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League.

The Bulls got off to a 1-0 start in the bottom half of the first inning. They added two more in the third as slugging third baseman Tai-shan Chang got his second hit of the evening. Two outs later, Song-yong Luo drove him in as Luo connected with his third home run of the year. Right fielder Jia-hao Chang had a 2-for-3 performance batting in the bottom of the order.

Newly acquired American native Lincoln Mikelsen started for the Agan and did a respectful job, surrendering three runs, all earned, on nine hits and one walk in seven innings to record a quality start. Mikelsen (0-1-0) fanned five in the loss.

AGAN NOTE: The First Securities Agan have seen a lot of changes this season. The ballclub added American native Lincholn Mikelsen to the 25-man roster, removing Korean native Dong Ho Kim. The right-hander Mikelsen has spent one year in the CPBL, a year in which he had a 6.30 ERA in 11 games. He is 185 cm tall and weighs 85 kg. Mikelsen hits right and will wear No. 7. Korean fans will be disappointed that Kim got removed but he disappointed the Agan as he was 0-3-0 with a 4.91 ERA in six games, three of them starts. In 25 2/3 innings, Kim registered 15 K's.
