Taiwan Baseball News: Relievers Become Starters; Martinez Throws 5-Inning No-Hitter

China Trust Whales 1 President Lions 7
The best pitchers in baseball are the starters. If they do not succeed it is usually because they do not have the "stuff" the third time around the starting lineup to fool the hitters. Then they become relievers and some do succed.
Two relievers made their starts last night and President Lions Jose Parra was definitely better than China Trust Whales former closer Kuo-lee Chien-fu as the Lions routed the Whales 7-1 before 1,732 fans at Tainan Stadium.
Parra surrendered one earned run on six hits and three walks in seven innings to pick up the win for the Leos. Parra, named the Game's MVP, fanned six batters en route to picking up his first win of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season. Lung-wei Kao and Jung-yang Tsao finished the win off the Lions.
Lions center fielder Kang-ling Huang went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored to set the table for his team in the leadoff spot while Japanese second baseman Hiroaki Yoshimi finished the evening 2-for-5 with a run plated. Right fielder Lien-hung Chen had a 3-for-4 performance to go along with one walk and one run scored.
This and three Whales errors lead to a horrific evening for Whales starter Chien-fu. He ended up surrendering six runs, two of them earned, on six hits and three walks in four innings of work.
Whales second baseman Jung-lin Chi went 1-for-3 with two walks to set the table for his team in the leadoff spot while first baseman Tsung-hui Tung finished the evening 2-for-2 with a run scored. Catcher Chin-sou Shin had a 1-for-3 performance.
The Whales will play the Lions again tonight at Tainan Stadium (6:35 p.m., Taiwan time).
