Taiwan Baseball News: Burgos Dominates; Pang, Yang Receive Offensive, Defensive Honours

By Andrew Wong

China Trust Whales 1 President Lions 2

American native John Burgos is definitely one of the hottest pitchers in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. The President Lions starter shutdown the China Turst Whales last night 2-1 before 1,635 fans at Tainan Stadium.

Burgos (5-4-0) gave up one earned run on five hits and two walks in a complete game, nine-inning performance to chalk up the victory. He struck out seven batters in the process of being named the Game's MVP.

Burgos was sharp and he needed to be as runs were hard to come by. The Leos scored once in the bottom half of the seventh inning before adding another in the eighth. The runs were off Whales starter Cheng-hsun Hsieh (7-5-1) and reliever Chao-huang Lin.

Third baseman Jia-rong Wu went 2-for-3 with one run scored in the leadoff spot to lead the Lions.

The Whales lone run came in the top half of the ninth inning to spoil Burgos' shutout.

With the win, the Lions moved past the Sinon Bulls for second place in the CPBL standings. They are now 1.5 games back of the league-leading Brother Elephants. The Whales will play the Lions again at Tainan Stadium tonight (6:35 p.m., Taiwan time).

CPBL NOTE: Brother Elephant outfielder Cheng-ming Pang was named the Offensive Player of the Month for the past month of July in which he had a .408 batting average (20-for-60) in 13 games. The 36-year-old right-handed hitter had six home runs, 17 RBIs and 11 walks. It was the second time this season that Pang was honoured by the Chinese Baseball Writers Association (CBWA). For the Defensive Player of the Month, the honour went to Sinon Bulls pitcher Chien-fu Yang. The right-hander had a 1.50 ERA in five appearances (18 innings; two starts, three relief appearances). He was 3-0-0 with four
walks and 16 strikeouts. Yang edged Elephants pitchers Jonathan Hurst and Ching-li Wang for the award. The 24-year-old graduate of the Taipei Physical Education College joined the Bulls in late June when he was drafted in the Chinese Professional Baseball League's mid-season draft.
