Taiwan Baseball News: Big Night For Chen In Lions Raid On Gida Territory

It was a big night for President Lions right fielder Lien-hung Chen as he went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs at Shingcung Stadium to lead his team to a 12-1 romp over the struggling Makoto Gida before 1,759 fans.
The Leos scored two runs each in the top half of the first, second, third and eighth innings while adding four runs in the fifth frame.
Other contributors included leadoff man Jia-rong Wu's 4-for-6 performance. Wu had a double, three runs plated and one driven in. Designated hitter Ming-chong Luo finished the evening 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI while left fielder Hung-yuan Lin went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, one run scored and one RBI.
Lions rookie Wei-luen Pan (9-6-0) went five shutout innings to qualify for the win. He scattered three hits, walked one and struck out four. Long-shui Dai surrendered one unearned run on four hits in three innings of relief behind Pan. Dai fanned three batters.
Gida starter Shih-ching Tsai's night was over early as he gave up six runs, five of the earned, on nine hits and one walk in just 2 1/3 innings of work. Rho-hui Feng surrendered four runs, all earned, on seven hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings of relief behind Tsai. Cheng-ching Chen followed that up by giving up two runs, both of them earned, on two hits and one walk. Newly acquired American native Shad Williams then made his debut by pitching one scoreless inning. He scattered just one hit while
striking out one.
On the offensive side of things, right fielder Cheng-han Wu went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI for the Gida.
GIDA NOTE: The Makoto Gida added American pitcher Shad Williams to the 25-man roster. The right-hander is 182 cm tall, weighs 88 kg and also hits right. This is his first year in the Chinese Professional Baseball League and he will wear No. 32 on his back. Short stop Jose Caballero was removed from the roster. The Dominican was batting .278 (5-for-18) with one RBI in five gamees.

The China Trust Whales beat the First Securities Agan before 1,683 onlookers at Jayi Stadium last night as designated hitter Han-chou Tseng belted his fourth home run of the 2003 CPBL season off Agan reliever Rue-hao Liang.
Chien-san Kao (6-3-1) picked up the win for the Whales while Korean native Dong Ho Kim (0-3-0) took the loss.
