Taiwan Baseball News: Whales Struggling and The Detroit Tigers of Taiwan ball

By Andrew Wong

China Trust Whales 4 Brother Elephants 5

The China Trust Whales are almost as bad as the third-place President Lions. The Whales fell 6.5 games back of the league-leading Sinon Bulls as they lost last night.

Left fielder Chin Jeh Lee and designated hitter Chin-yong Wang both launched home runs into the seats as the Brother Elephants beat the China Trust Whales 5-4 last night before 4,856 fans at Tian Mu Stadium. The Sinon Bulls have a chance to increase their lead as they play a makeup game today against Elephants at Shingcung Stadium (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time).

Jeh's third homer of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season was off Whales starter Cheng-hsun Hsieh (4-4-1) as he finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Jeh was named the Game's MVP. Hsieh also surrendered Wang's second round-tripper as the DH went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs plated and another driven in. Also contributing for the 26-20-2 Elephants was center fielder Chih-yuen Chen, who had a 2-for-4 performance to set the tables.

Hsieh picked up the loss for the 26-19-5 Whales as he gave up four runs, all earned, on five hits in only two innings of work. He managed to walk one and strike out three. Chien-san Kao came on in long-relief and gave up an unearned run on three hits through 4 2/3 innings. He walked and struck out four batters.

Ching-li Wang had a solid outing for the Elephants as he scattered eight hits, gave up three runs, all earned, in six innings to pick up the W. He walked five and struck out six on 124 pitches, 67 of them for strikes, en route to improving to 3-3-0. Shih-ping Chen and Ruen-win Hsiao closed out the ball game with Hsiao picking up his six save of the year.

For the Whales, designated hitter Chi-fong Hung went 1-for-2 with a walk and one RBI while Dominican third baseman Juan Melo finished the evening 1-for-4 with a walk.

President Lions 11 First Securities Agan 1

The President Lions have about as much hope as the China Trust Whales of catching the CPBL-leading Sinon Bulls - which is next to nothing as the Lions got to within seven games with a 11-1 trouncing of the last-place and even more hopeless First Securities Agan last night in front of 1,036 fans at Kaoshung Stadium.

American native John Burgos finally got his first win as he pitched five shutout innings before being relieved by rookie sensation Wei-luen Pan, who gave up an unearned run on four hits in three innings. He walked and struck out one. Burgos, meanwhile, scattered four hits, fanned six and walked none in an encouraging 64-pitch outing as he improved to 1-2-0. Jung-yang Tsao, who has not had a lot of games to save lately due to the Lions struggles, pitched one scoreless inning to close the game out. He
had one strikeout.

Japanese second baseman Hiroaki Yoshimi went 0-for-4 for the 24-23-3 Leos but was a havoc all night in the leadoff spot as he walked once and scored twice. First baseman Chuan-jia Wang went 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored while designated hitter Lien-hung Chen finished the evening 0-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored along with one RBI. Left fielder Hung-yuan Lin continued to capitalize on poor Agan pitching as he went 1-for-2 with one run driven in.

So, who was responsible for all the free passes? Agan starter Rue-hao Liang walked seven and gave up seven runs, all earned, on four hits in three innings as he fell to 5-6-0. Maybe he's disinterested with his team at 9-37-3.
