Taiwan Baseball News: Bicknell Out, Kim In; Whales and Elephants Lock Heads

China Trust Whales 5 Brother Elephants 5 (10 innings)
The China Trust Whales took a 5-4 lead in the top half of the ninth inning with three runs but the Brother Elephants came back to tie it in the bottom half of the inning and we had another tie last night as the Whales and Elephants drew the score at 5-5 before 2,804 fans at Shingchu Stadium.
Elephants all-star center fielder Chih-yuen Chen was named the Game's MVP as he launched his eighth home run of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season off of Whales starter Hiroaki Nakayama, who gave up three runs, all earned, on eight hits in seven innings of work. He walked four and struck out four on 109 pitches, 65 of them for strikes. Chen finished the evening 2-for-4 with a walk, one run scored and two RBIs. His batting average has not dropped below .300 all season long.
Right fielder Cheng-ming Pang blasted his sixth homer, a solo shot, off Whales reliever Kuo-lee Chien-fu, who ended up giving up two runs, all earned, on four hits in two innings. Pang ended up going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk with one run scored and one RBI. Short stop Rue-chang Chen went 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI while second baseman Shun-shian Fong went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs plated.
For the 26-18-4 Whales, first baseman Tsung-hui Tung delivered a run scoring single in a pinch-hit at-bat while Dominican third baseman Juan Melo snapped out of a mini funk with a 2-for-4 performance.
American native Jonathan Hurst went eight innings for the 25-20-1 Elephants, who are now five games over .500 thanks to a recent hot streak. Hurst surrendered four runs, three of them earned, on ten hits through eight innings. He walked two and struck out three on 128 pitches with an amazing 82 of them for strikes.
CPBL NOTE: Last night's game between the Makoto Gida and Sinon Bulls was postponed and will be played today at 2:00 p.m. (Taiwan time) at the same venue as originally scheduled - Taichung Stadium.
AGAN NOTE: The First Securities Agan have reinstated Dominican pitcher Gabriel Ozura to the 25-man roster and have moved American native Greg Bicknell (pitcher) off the roster. Ozura is 0-3-0 with a 4.88 ERA in four games this season and he has 14 strikeouts. Bicknell, a native of Fresno, California, was 0-8-0 with a 5.05 ERA in 13 games. He had 47 punchouts. Bicknell had pitched with the Luka of the Taiwan Major League (TML) before coming over to the Agan.
The last-place Agan also added Korean pitcher Dong Ho Kim to the 25-man roster. Kim is 183 cm tall, weighs 80 kg, throws right and hits right. This is his first year in the CPBL and he will wear No. 30. Kim will join fellow Korean Yun Hee Gyoung on the roster.
