Taiwan Baseball News: Davenport Proves Worth of Mighty U.S. Buck

China Trust Whales 1 Brother Elephants 11

Short stop Rue-chang Chen went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and one RBI and center fielder Chih-yuen Chen went 2-for-4 with a walk and his seventh home run of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season to lead the Brother Elephants to a 11-1 win over the China Trust Whales last night in front of 1,794 fans at Shingchu Stadium. Chen finished with two runs and three RBIs and was named the Game's MVP.

The 25-20-1 Elephants had a big offensive night as they blew the game wide open with six runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Right fielder Cheng-ming Pang went 1-for-3 with two walks, one run scored and another driven in while designated hitter Chin Jeh Lee went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Dominican native Maximo Rosa took the loss for the 26-18-4 Whales as he gave up five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits through 6 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out five and that contributed to his 111 pitch count. Things went from bad to worse for the losers as Chao-huang Lin gave up three runs, none of them earned however, on five hits as he pitched to three batters in relief of Rosa.

Japanese native Shin Nakagomi improved to 5-5-0 as he scattered fours hits and gave up one earned run in seven innings. Nakagomi walked two and struck out six on 87 pitches, 58 of them for strikes.

For the Whales, designated hitter Chi-fong Hung went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI while Dominican third baseman Juan Melo went 0-for-4.

The Whales and Elephants will play again tonight at Shingchu Stadium (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time).

Um, what do I write here?

Joe Davenport and Gabriel Ozura, back on the First Securities Agan roster, went toe-to-toe and the President Lions and Agan ended up playing to a 0-0 tie last night at Kaoshung Stadium in front of just 454 fans.

Davenport went nine shutout innings as he walked two and struck out two. Ozura went seven shutout innings before turning things over to Wen-hsiung Hsu and Feng-hua Lee, who both closed the game out.
