The China Trust Whales suffered a setback in their quest to the catch the Chinese Professional Baseball League-leading Sinon Bulls last night as they were doubled 6-3 by the Makoto Gida before 1,490 fans at Jayi Stadium.
The Bulls beat the President Lions 7-3 last night at Tainan Stadium to increase their lead to 2.5 games over the second-place Whales, who are at 25-15-4.
Gida left fielder Chan-rong Chiou went 3-for-4 to lead his team. He scored two runs, had one RBI, walked one and had one double as he was named the Game's MVP. Consistent second baseman Yi-shian Lin finished the evening 1-for-2 with a double and came around to score.
Chi-chia Yang gave up three earned runs in six innings to pick up the win for the Gida and improve to 4-4-0. He gave up five hits, walked three, struck out two and threw 90 pitches, 53 of them for strikes. American native Bobby Munoz pitched one scoreless innings to pick up his fourth save of the year. Munoz gave up just the lone hit and struck out one.
Whales starter Cheng-hsun Hsieh, who came into the ballgame leading the CPBL in ERA at 1.48, saw that rise as he surrendered four runs, all earned, on seven hits in three innings to pick up the loss to drop to 4-2-1. He walked one and struck out one on 64 pitches, 37 of which were for strikes.
For the Whales, center fielder Song-hsuen Yang went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a triple and a walk while second baseman Yueh-liang Lin finished the evening 1-for-3 with a double, a base on ball and three RBIs. Dominican third baseman Juan Melo went 1-for-4.
