Taiwan Baseball News: Pitchers Suffer Tough Losses

Makoto Gida 5 Brother Elephants 3

The Makoto Gida scored a run each in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and tacked on one more in the ninth to put away the Brother Elephants 5-3 in front of 6,117 fans last night at Tian Mu Stadium.

Shih-ching Tsai improved to 4-4-0 as he went 6 2/3 innings for the 15-24-1 Gida. He gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. Tsai also walked four and struck out none en route to being named the Game's MVP. American Bobby Munoz pitched one scoreless inning to pick up his second save of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season.

The Gida got a 3-for-4 performance from designated hitter Chan-rong Chiou and two of those three hits were doubles while second baseman Yi-shian Lin drove in a run on his 1-for-4 night.

Japanese native Shin Nakagomi went the distance for the Elephants, giving up five runs, three of them earned. He scattered ten hits, walked four, struck out seven, and threw 154 pitches, 100 of them for strikes. But his team didn't help out much as they committed three defensive errors behind him. A very hardluck loss indeed!

With the loss, the Elephants dropped below the .500 barrier again at 18-19-1.

President Lions 5 China Trust Whales 4

After starting off the year strong, the President Lions have found themselves in a dicey situation. They are four and a half games back of the CPBL-leading Sinon Bulls, who were idle last night.

Last night, the Lions tried desperately to climb back into the race as they defeated the second-place China Trust Whales 5-4 before 2,366 fans at Shingchu Stadium.

The 24-13-4 Whales were leading 4-0 heading into the eighth inning before the 22-16-2 Lions jumped on Japanese ace Hiroaki Nakayama (6-2-0) for an uncharacteristic five earned runs.

Fellow Japanese Hiroaki Yoshimi went 2-for-4 with one run scored and another run driven in against his countryman while left/right fielder Chuan-jia Wang did the same thing. Designated hitter Lien-hung Chen finished the evening 3-for-4 with one run plated and had one RBI to complete the hitting barrage at the top of the order.

The Leos got a pretty rough debut from newly aquired American pitcher John Burgos. He gave up four runs, three earned, in 4 2/3 innings since joining the Lions. He also walked one and struck out five batters. Closer Jung-yang Tsao pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to record his tenth save of the year.

For the Whales, designated hitter Chi-fong Hung and Dominican third baseman Juan Melo each went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
