Taiwan Baseball News: Lions Too Busy Adjusting SARS-Proof Masks...

Here in SARS ravaged Taiwan, American native Jonathan Hurst struggled last night, giving up seven earned runs in 6 2/3 innings but his Brother Elephants scored eight runs en route to a 8-7 win over the Makoto Gida in front of 3,006 fans at Shingchu Stadium.
Hurst gave up nine hits, walked four and struck out six to improve to 4-2-0. He threw 122 pitches, 67 of them for strikes.
Meanwhile, fellow American Ned Daley started for the 14-23-1 Gida and scattered six hits to go along with six runs, four of them earned, in four innings of work. Daley dropped to 1-4-0 with two saves to his credit.
Gida designated hitter Chin-yi Cheng connected off Hurst for his seventh home run of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season as he finished the evening 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Right fielder Cheng-han Wu went 1-for-4 with two runs plated and another driven in while first baseman Jia-hsian Hsieh continued his hot streak with a 2-for-5 performance to go along with two RBIs. Setting the table was left fielder Chan-rong Chiou, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The 17-18-1 Elephants got a 2-for-3 performance from short stop Rue-chang Chen, who also chipped in with one RBI and two runs. Center fielder Chih-yuen Chen finished at 1-for-3 with one run scored and had one RBI while right fielder Cheng-ming Pang went 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs.
American native Bobby Munoz pitched one scoreless inning for the Gida. He struck out two of the three batters he faced.
The Gida and Elephants will play again tonight (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time), this time at Shingcung Stadium.

President Lions 1 China Trust Whales 4
The President Lions spent too much time adjusting their SARS-proof masks as they committed four defensive errors last night to help American native Joe Davenport give up four runs, one of which was earned, to take the loss along with his team. The China Trust Whales won 4-1 at Shingcung Stadium in front of 1,024 faithful.
Davenport ended up pitching eights innings, gave up eight hits, walked two struck out one. He threw 114 pitches, 69 for strikes. He dropped to 8-2-0.
For the 21-16-1 Leos, right fielder Lien-hung Chen went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
For the 24-12-3 Whales, first baseman Tsung-hui Tung 1-for-4 with two runs scored while designated hitter Chi-fong Hung finished the night 1-for-4 with two runs scored and another driven in. Dominican third baseman Juan Melo went 3-for-4.
With the victory, the Whales are now two games back of the CPBL-leading Sinon Bulls, who will play the last-place First Securities Agan tonight (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time) at Kaoshung Stadium. Meanwhile, with the loss, the Lions are now 5.5 games back of first place.
