Brother Elephants 3 President Lions 15

With the red-hot Sinon Bulls roaring at the top of the Chinese Professional Baseball League, the President Lions know that they have to be playing their best baseball in order to catch the leaders. Last night was a very good start as the Lions got a solid seven inning performance from American native Joe Davenport (8-1-0), who gave up five hits and three runs, one of which was earned, to beat the Brother Elephants 15-3 before 5,518 fans at Tainan Stadium. Davenport ended up throwing 95 pitches, 49 of them for strikes.

The 13-17-1 Elephants drew first blood as they capitalized for three runs in the first two innings due to one of three errors by the Leos. Second baseman Shun-shian Fong went 1-for-3 with one RBI for the Elephants while right fielder Cheng-ming Pang went 2-for-3.

The 20-12-0 Lions jumped on the Elephants for six runs in a big sixth inning as right fielder Lien-hung Chen finished the night 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs as he hit his seventh home run of the 2003 season. Left fielder Chuan-jia Wang came in for starting LF Hung-yuan Lin, who went 0-for-3, and finished 1-for-1 with one run and two RBIs.

The Elephants and Lions will play again tonight (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time) at Tainan Stadium to continue their series while the Bulls will get a chance to increase their series lead as they play host to the third-place China Trust Whales at Shingcung Stadium.
