Taiwan Baseball News: Closer Morel Picks Up Save and Game MVP Award
By Andrew Wong
Sinon Bulls 9 Makoto Gida 7
When was the last time a closer was named Game MVP? Say what you will but Ramon Morel was the difference last night as he pitched 2 1/3 flawless innings to pace the Sinon Bulls past the Makoto Gida 9-7 in front of 1,136 onlookers. Thus Morel picked up the Game MVP honour. He ended up with his sixth save of the 2003 Chinese Professional Baseball League season in relief of starter Chung-nan Tsai, who gave up an uncharacteristic seven runs, all earned, in 6 2/3 innings. Tsai saw his 2003 ERA rise to 3.44 in picking up the win to improve to 3-2-0 while Morel's ERA dropped to 0.57.
There were many other candidates for the Game MVP award as Bulls' third baseman Tai-shan Chang cranked his sixth home run of the year off Gida starter Michael Marchesano, who pitched four innings and gave up five runs, four of them earned. Fellow foreigner Shayne Bennett pitched three frames in relief and gave up one earned run. Chang went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and had two RBIs coming off a home run.
In addition to Chang, Bulls' left fielder Song-yong Luo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
For the Gida, second baseman Yi-shian Lin had two hits in four at-bats with an RBI and a run scored while designated hitter Bao-hong Chen contributed one hit in his only AB with an RBI.
Gida reliever Ming-chin Lee gave up three unearned runs in two innings to fall to 1-2-0 as his team comitted four errors.
The Bulls and Gida go at it again tonight at Shingcung (6:35 p.m. Taiwan time) in game two.
